Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT)

Objective of AMRUT :

• The objective is universal water 
supply; improvement in sewerage network; developing 
children and Divyang friendly 
green spaces and parks; 
improvement in storm water 
drainage and non-motorized 
urban transport.
• It spans across 500 cities, covering more than 60% of the 
population.

Achievement of AMRUT :

• Since launch, 78 lakh water tap 
connections, 45 lakh sewerage and septage connections have been provided.
• Online Building Permission System (OBPS) is implemented across 444 AMRUT cities aimed at reducing the overall time taken for approvals of building plans, while ensuring a seamless 
process.
• Water ATMs installed to dispense drinking water as cheap as Re.1 per litreand facilitate people to get 24x7 clean and safe drinking water.
• Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant as low-cost option for treatment of fecal sludge & septage taken up in in various states.
• Capacity creation in waste water treatment, including water recycling capacity, installing energy-efficient LED streetlights were taken up.

Challenges:

• Targets not achieved: More projects are being implemented in the green space cover and parks rather than the primary concerns of water supply and 
sewerage management.
• Imbalance in the functions and Finances of Urban local Bodies
need to be rectified by strengthening 74th Constitutional amendment Act.
